MISSISSIPPI — A child died after a car ran off the Natchez Trace Parkway and into a flooded creek in Lee County earlier this week, according to authorities.

The crash happened around 8:30 p.m. on March 9 along the parkway between Cliff Gookin Road and Palmetto Road. Witnesses reported seeing a vehicle swerve off the roadway and drive into Coonewah Creek.

Emergency crews searched the area that night but were unable to locate the vehicle.

Authorities returned to the scene the following day, March 10, and used a drone to locate the submerged vehicle in the creek.

Lee County Coroner Carolyn Green told the Daily Journal that the body of an unidentified girl was recovered from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene.

Officials said the driver of the vehicle has not been located. The incident remains under investigation.
