OHIO — A recently hired bailiff for Campbell Municipal Court was arrested early Sunday morning on a drug charge, according to local authorities.

David Horvath, who was officially hired as the court’s bailiff on July 7, is being held in the Mahoning County Jail after being pulled over by police shortly after 1 a.m. on Wilson Avenue near 2nd Street.

According to the police report, officers observed Horvath’s vehicle weaving and nearly going off the road. Horvath told police he was trying to avoid a pothole.

Police asked Horvath to exit the vehicle to allow a K-9 officer to conduct a sniff test. During a pat-down, officers reportedly discovered a cut straw with white powder on it in Horvath’s pocket. Horvath claimed the straw was used to ingest nasal medication.

Further search revealed a bag containing a suspected drug. Horvath told officers the substance was not his and that a friend had given it to him to hold. Police said the substance later tested positive for cocaine.

Campbell Police Chief Kevin Sferra confirmed Horvath’s role as bailiff. Horvath is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday at 9 a.m.
