MICHIGAN — A Michigan homeowner may face felony animal abuse and torture charges after deputies discovered dozens of animals living in hazardous conditions, including a dead dog in the yard, according to Calhoun County authorities.

The investigation began Tuesday when deputies responded to a home on 8½ Mile Road following reports of possible animal neglect.

With the homeowner’s permission, deputies searched the property and found unsanitary and dangerous conditions, including a strong urine odor and animal waste. Numerous cats and dogs were in poor health, and a dead dog was found in the backyard.

The 68-year-old homeowner surrendered all animals. In total, 68 dogs were removed from the single-story, three-bedroom home and taken to the Calhoun County Animal Shelter for evaluation and medical care. The animals will be available for adoption in the future.

The case remains under investigation, and charges are expected pending review by the Calhoun County Prosecutor’s Office.
