COLUMBUS — In response to the devastation caused by Hurricane Helene throughout the southeastern United States, Ohio Governor Mike DeWine and the Ohio Department of Commerce are urging Ohioans to ensure their donations are directed to legitimate organizations that are truly aiding victims of the storm.

“Our fellow Americans need our help in the aftermath of this terrible storm,” said Governor DeWine. “Ohioans have always stepped up to the plate when disaster strikes, whether at home or across the nation.”

To support recovery efforts, officials recommend donating to established organizations like the American Red Cross, United Way, and the Salvation Army.

These groups provide trusted avenues for contributions to help with storm cleanup and recovery.

Sherry Maxfield, Director of the Ohio Department of Commerce, warns of scammers looking to take advantage of the public’s generosity in the wake of the disaster.

“Unfortunately, scams and fraudulent activity often present a very real threat following natural disasters; the current situation involving Hurricane Helene is likely no exception,” Maxfield said.

To ensure donations go to those in need, Ohioans are encouraged to follow these guidelines:

• Donate only to trusted charities with a proven record in disaster relief.
• Research charities online using resources like the BBB’s Wise Giving Alliance or Charity Watch.
• Be cautious when donating through crowdfunding sites unless you personally know the recipient.
• Avoid using insecure payment methods like cash, gift cards, or cryptocurrency; credit cards offer better protection.
• Verify text donation numbers through the charity’s official website.

Governor DeWine has also deployed the Ohio National Guard to North Carolina to assist with flood recovery and other critical efforts.

Ohioans are encouraged to help, but to do so with caution to ensure their generosity has the intended impact.
