Ohio resident dead following vehicle crash in Virginia

VIRGINIA — Virginia State Police are investigating a fatal crash on Interstate 81 in Washington County that claimed the life of a 90-year-old man.

The crash occurred shortly after 8 p.m. Friday at mile marker 26 in the southbound lanes.

State police reported that a 1997 Ford E-150, driven by Jimmie Fields of Lewis Center, Ohio, was struck by a tractor-trailer changing lanes. The Ford then hit a guardrail, entered the median, and struck a concrete pillar.

Fields, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was pronounced dead at the scene. A passenger in the Ford, who was wearing a seatbelt, sustained serious injuries. The tractor-trailer driver reportedly suffered minor injuries and was wearing a seatbelt at the time.

As of Monday, charges were pending, and the crash remained under investigation.
