Multiple Texas schools announce closures for May

TEXAS — Most public schools across Texas are expected to be closed on Monday, May 25, 2026, in observance of Memorial Day, according to multiple district academic calendars statewide.

Memorial Day, observed annually on the last Monday in May, is a federally recognized holiday honoring U.S. military personnel who died in service.

As such, it is widely observed by school systems across Texas, with districts consistently designating the day as a student and staff holiday. Calendars from districts such as Dallas Independent School District, Corpus Christi ISD, and Northside ISD all list May 25 as a day when schools and offices are closed.

Additional district calendars, including those from Cypress-Fairbanks ISD and United ISD, also confirm that Memorial Day is observed as a full closure, often labeled as a “student/staff holiday” or “no school” day. State guidance and district practices further reinforce that schools are not in session on Memorial Day across Texas.

For the month of May, Memorial Day stands out as the only broadly observed holiday that results in widespread school closures across Texas. While some districts may schedule additional non-instructional days—such as teacher workdays, early release days, or the final day of school—these vary by district and are not consistently observed statewide.

In many cases, Memorial Day falls at or near the end of the academic year. Numerous Texas school districts schedule their final student days in late May, often within the same week as the holiday or shortly afterward.

Following the Memorial Day holiday, most Texas students either return briefly to complete the school year or have already concluded classes, as districts transition into summer break.
