Multiple schools in Virginia announce closures for Monday

VIRGINIA — A major winter storm that brought snow, sleet and hazardous travel conditions to the mid-Atlantic region has prompted extensive school closures, delays and remote-learning plans across Virginia for Monday, January 26, 2026.

With roadways slick from ice and continuing impacts from Winter Storm Fern, many school districts and divisions are keeping buildings and offices closed or shifting instruction online to protect students and staff.

In northern VirginiaAlexandria City Public Schools announced that all schools and administrative offices will be closed Monday due to the ongoing winter storm conditions. Officials also canceled extracurricular activities and warned families to stay off icy roads.

Across the state, multiple other school divisions have already confirmed closures or remote learning days for Monday. Clarke County Schools are closed through Monday and Tuesday, while other districts from Shenandoah Valley and southwest Virginia are listing closures or online instruction as part of their winter weather responses.

In Halifax County, public schools will be closed Monday with a remote learning day in place, allowing students to complete assignments from home while staff work remotely.

Some divisions are planning delayed openings or alternative schedules. In parts of central Virginia, local systems are announcing either delayed start times or remote options depending on road conditions and forecast updates from the National Weather Service.

In addition to K-12 closures, several districts are prepared to switch to asynchronous remote learning later in the week if inclement weather persists. Plans being shared by divisions reflect continued caution due to unsafe travel and ongoing impacts of snow and ice across regions of the state.

Parents and caregivers have been urged to monitor local school communications for the latest updates, as districts may revise closure or learning plans if conditions change.
