MISSISSIPPI — Winter Storm Fern continues to affect school schedules across Mississippi, with many school districts closed Wednesday due to dangerous road conditions, power outages and continued winter weather impacts that have lingered since the weekend.
Several districts have announced that classes will not be held Wednesday as school buildings remain inaccessible or unsafe because of icy roads, storm damage and utility disruptions. According to weather and local reporting:
- Benton County School District — Closed all day Wednesday as part of an extended weather closure through Friday.
- Oxford School District (Lafayette County) — Closed through the week, including Wednesday.
- Pontotoc County School District — Closed Tuesday and Wednesday due to inclement weather and widespread power issues.
- Booneville School District — Closed Wednesday as part of a week-long closure for storm impacts.
- South Panola School District — Closed Wednesday as part of extended weather closures.
- New Albany School District — Closed both Tuesday and Wednesday due to hazardous conditions and utility challenges.
- Union County (East Union) — Closed Wednesday along with the earlier closures.
- Calhoun City Elementary — Closed Wednesday because of ice and winter conditions.
- Tishomingo County Schools — Closed Wednesday and beyond while conditions are re-evaluated.
The ongoing closures follow a severe ice storm and winter weather event that has left much of Mississippi with downed power lines, major road hazards and widespread outages. Officials continue to focus on power restoration and public safety as temperatures remain dangerously low.
Parents and guardians are encouraged to check with their local school districts for any additional updates, as weather conditions and district decisions may change later in the day.
