KENTUCKY — Following a notable winter storm that brought snow, ice and sustained dangerously cold conditions to much of Kentucky this week, many school districts across the Commonwealth have announced adjusted schedules for Thursday, January 29, 2026. Due to lingering road hazards and continued cold impacts, some schools will operate remotely, cancel in-person classes, or remain closed.
Central and Eastern Kentucky
- Fayette County Public Schools will use a Non-Traditional Instruction (NTI) day on Thursday, Jan. 29, meaning students will learn remotely rather than attend in-person. All after-school and evening activities are also canceled, and Friday, Jan. 30, is planned as a traditional snow day with no instruction.
Western Kentucky and Owensboro Region
A published update lists several districts with specific plans for Thursday:
- Daviess County Public Schools — NTI Day on Jan. 29 with traditional snow day planned for Jan. 30.
- Owensboro Public Schools — Traditional Snow Day Jan. 29–30 (no in-person classes).
- Owensboro Catholic Schools, St. Mary of the Woods School / Trinity High School, Mary Carrico Catholic School, Grace Christian Academy, McLean County Public Schools, Hancock County Public Schools, Ohio County Public Schools, and Muhlenberg County Public Schools — various combinations of NTI or snow days on Jan. 29.
- Highlands Latin School — two-hour delay (Jan. 29) before school begins.
Other District Reports and Local Conditions
Closures and NTI designations for the week have varied widely by district as winter conditions persisted, with some systems already using NTI days earlier in the week to continue instruction virtually while avoiding unsafe travel on icy secondary roads.
Across Kentucky, officials emphasize that icy road surfaces, refreezing overnight conditions and extreme cold remain safety concerns for students and staff, prompting these schedule adjustments even as crews continue snow and ice removal efforts. Families are advised to check directly with their local school district or official communications channels for the most up-to-date Thursday schedule information.
