GEORGIA — Several school districts in Georgia have adjusted their schedules for Wednesday because of lingering hazardous conditions following the weekend winter storm that brought ice and disruption across the state.
In northeast Georgia, multiple counties will close schools to students Wednesday due to remaining icy roads and safety concerns:
- Habersham County Schools — closed for the day as icy side roads, downed trees and low power lines continue to pose risks.
Districts in surrounding northeast counties also reported closures:
- Elbert County Schools — no classes for students Wednesday; staff will report later in the morning.
- Franklin County Schools — closed for students; staff scheduled to report in mid-morning.
- Hart County Schools — closed to students Wednesday.
- Stephens County School System — closed for the day.
Local colleges also announced schedule changes:
- Athens Technical College — campuses will open later in the morning.
- North Georgia Technical College — all campuses and adult education centers closed Wednesday.
- Piedmont University — will resume classes, but students and staff who cannot safely travel are advised to contact instructors or supervisors.
Officials continue to monitor roads and weather conditions, which remain unpredictable in some rural and backroad areas, and urged families to check with their specific school districts for the most current information.
