OHIO — A woman has been charged after her 8-year-old child brought a loaded handgun to an elementary school in Kent on Thursday, according to police.
Authorities said officers responded to Longcoy Elementary School around 12:30 p.m. after a student reported seeing a gun in a second grader’s waistband during recess.
School staff located the weapon, identified as a loaded 9mm handgun, inside the child’s backpack and secured it. No injuries were reported.
Investigators determined the child had access to the firearm at home and intentionally brought it to school. The reason for doing so remains unclear.
Police arrested 34-year-old Gloria Luster of Kent and charged her with child endangerment, a first-degree misdemeanor.
Officials credited the student who reported the weapon and school staff for acting quickly to prevent a potentially dangerous situation.
Authorities are reminding gun owners to properly secure firearms and ammunition and to encourage children to report suspicious activity.
The incident remains under investigation.
