Missing person found dead in Mississippi

MISSISSIPPI — The Adams County Sheriff’s Office is investigating after a missing man was found dead Sunday.

According to Adams County Sheriff Travis Patten, he was notified of a missing person identified as Terrance Jones by Edward Good on Jan. 26. Sheriff Patten said he was contacted the following day by Jones’ sister, who provided additional information regarding Jones’ last known whereabouts.

Deputies were sent to the 28 North Commerce Street Extension, where they made contact with the homeowner. The homeowner told deputies she had not seen Jones since December.

Patten said the sheriff’s office later received another call regarding Jones, prompting deputies to return to the area on Feb. 1. At that time, deputies were unable to make contact with the homeowner. While on scene, a patrol sergeant observed an open rear door at an abandoned residence located at 30 North Commerce Street Extension.

After detecting a strong odor coming from inside the home, deputies announced their presence and entered the residence. Inside, deputies found a body wrapped in blankets in one of the rooms. The Adams County Criminal Investigations Unit was contacted and responded to the scene.

A wallet found on the deceased contained identification belonging to Terrance Jones, Patten said. Jones’ body was taken into custody by the Adams County Coroner and will be transported to the Mississippi Crime Laboratory for further examination and to determine the cause of death.

“At this time, there are no obvious signs of foul play; however, a full forensic examination is pending,” Patten said in a statement.

Officials said the case is currently being treated as a death investigation. “We wish the circumstances were different, but we are thankful that Mr. Jones was located, as many missing persons cases do not end with closure. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and loved ones as they grieve this tragic loss,” Patten said.

The investigation remains active and ongoing. No further information has been released at this time.
