NORTH CAROLINA — A 71-year-old inmate was found dead at the Forsyth County Detention Center, according to the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office.

The inmate, identified as Russell Marshall, was discovered unresponsive by detention staff during routine rounds. Officers immediately began CPR and called for additional medical assistance, but Marshall could not be revived.

Officials said Marshall had been housed in the detention center’s medical dorm due to multiple health conditions.

He had been in custody since his arrest on September 26, 2022, on a charge of first-degree arson. He was being held on a $1 million bond.

The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation will conduct an independent investigation, which is standard procedure in cases involving in-custody deaths.

The investigation remains ongoing.
