Woman robbed by men claiming to be U.S. Marshals in Illinois

ILLINOIS — Police in Decatur are investigating a reported robbery after a woman said she was robbed in her hotel room by two men who claimed to be federal law enforcement officers.

According to Sgt. Hagemeyer with the Decatur Police Department, the incident occurred around 3:30 a.m. on Jan. 31 in the 3100 block of North Water Street.

Police said the female victim reported that two men were knocking on doors in the hallway of the hotel where she was staying. When she looked out her door, the men claimed to be with the U.S. Marshals Service. The woman went back inside her room, but before she could fully close the door, the men forced their way inside.

Sgt. Hagemeyer said the suspects flashed a badge and told the woman they had a warrant for her arrest. The men then emptied her purse and stole money and her cellphone before leaving the scene on foot.
