KENTUCKY — A Virginia woman was arrested late this month after authorities said she was trafficking methamphetamine in Pike County.

According to the Pike County Sheriff’s Office, deputies arrested Cherish Dawn Conaway, 19, of Cedar Bluff, on Dec. 27 following a traffic stop during a DUI safety checkpoint.

Deputies said the checkpoint was being conducted on U.S. Route 319 in the Hardy community when Conaway’s vehicle approached. Officers reported smelling marijuana coming from inside the vehicle and asked Conaway to pull to the side. Deputies said Conaway had glassy eyes and told them she had smoked marijuana about six hours earlier.

During a search of the vehicle, deputies said they found a glass pipe commonly used to smoke methamphetamine. Officers also reported locating a small bag believed to contain methamphetamine under the driver’s seat and another bag with a suspected methamphetamine substance inside the glove box.

Police said Conaway admitted the drugs belonged to her. She was taken to the Pike County Detention Center and charged with trafficking in a controlled substance in the first degree, first offense, involving less than two grams of methamphetamine; first-degree possession of a controlled substance, first offense; and possession of drug paraphernalia.

The case remains under investigation.
