VIRGINIA — Several school divisions and education-related agencies across southwest and western Virginia will operate on delayed schedules Friday, January 16, 2026, as lingering winter weather conditions continue to affect the region. Officials say the delays are intended to allow additional time for road treatment and safer travel for buses, staff, and students.
The following Virginia school divisions will open two hours late Friday: Bland County Public Schools, Craig County Public Schools, Giles County Public Schools, Grayson County Public Schools, Highland County Public Schools, and Tazewell County Public Schools.
In far southwest Virginia, Dickenson County Public Schools, Lee County Public Schools, Russell County Public Schools, Scott County Public Schools, and Wise County Public Schools will also operate on a two-hour delay.
Norton City Public Schools will open two hours late and utilize alternate bus routes, with officials directing families to the district’s app or website for transportation details. Wise County Christian School will also open two hours late.
In addition, Scott County Early Head Start and Southwest Virginia Community College will open two hours late. The Russell County Department of Social Services will open at 10 a.m.
School officials remind families to remain alert for any additional updates as conditions evolve.
