VIRGINIA — In a significant move underscoring its commitment to ethical governance, the Coalition of Loudoun Towns (COLT) announced the suspension of Mayor Chris Bertaut from the organization, effective immediately.
This decision follows allegations of unethical conduct attributed to the mayor, including violations of Virginia state laws such as the Virginia Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), conflict of interest statutes, and open meeting laws.
COLT, a group representing various towns within Loudoun County, emphasized its dedication to transparency and accountability in public service.
A statement released by the coalition today explained that Mayor Bertaut’s recent actions fell short of the ethical and legal standards expected from public officials.
The coalition clarified that the suspension was not related to Bertaut’s policy decisions regarding the Town of Purcellville but was due to concerns about the processes and methods employed by the mayor and his administration in making those decisions.
“Accountability, integrity, transparency, and compliance with the law are the cornerstones of public service,” said Kelly Burk, Mayor of the Town of Leesburg and a member of COLT.
“We believe strongly in the oath we all take to uphold the rule of law and demonstrate ethical leadership across all Loudoun County municipalities. Our actions aim to reinforce these values.”
Support for the suspension also came from other local leaders, including Bridge Littleton, Mayor of the Town of Middleburg; Ken Wine, Mayor of the Town of Hamilton; Chris Hornbaker, Mayor of the Town of Lovettsville; Scott Ramsey, Mayor of the Town of Round Hill; and Roger Vance, Mayor of the Town of Hillsboro.
They emphasized the importance of maintaining adherence to established rules and regulations in governance.
With the suspension now in effect, the Town of Purcellville faces a period of uncertainty as the community looks to rebuild trust in its elected officials.
