Two students arrested for breaking into Florida elementary school, causing over $50K in damage

FLORIDA — Two boys, ages 12 and 13, were arrested after authorities say they broke into Friendship Elementary School and caused more than $50,000 in damage.

The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office reported that the boys shattered a glass door and vandalized the media center on Saturday. Officials said the boys later returned to the school to view the damage and reportedly caused additional destruction.

Body camera footage released by the sheriff’s office showed toppled tables and carts, scattered books and supplies, black paint on the walls, and damage to a bathroom.

The suspects were identified after their mothers contacted authorities, and both confessed to the crime. Each boy was charged with two counts of burglary, two counts of trespassing on school grounds, criminal mischief, and theft.

The sheriff’s office initially posted a photo of the masked suspects to Facebook as part of the investigation.
