OHIO — Two people were injured following a police chase that began in Northern Kentucky and ended in a crash in downtown Cincinnati, authorities said.
According to Newport police, the incident began during a theft investigation near the Newport Pavilion.
Officers attempted to stop a vehicle that was blocked behind another car near Tire Discounters.
Police say the driver backed up around a patrol car, prompting a Newport officer to fire shots at the vehicle. It is unclear if either occupant was struck by gunfire.
The vehicle then fled north on I-471. Police say it lost control at Exit 5 to US 50 and crashed on East 3rd Street in downtown Cincinnati.
The driver and passenger were taken to UC Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries resulting from the crash. Their identities have not been released.
Authorities said both individuals will face charges in Kentucky. Because an officer discharged a firearm, the Kentucky State Police has taken over the investigation.
