OHIO — Firefighters and deputies responded Monday night to a house explosion in Middleton Township that left two men injured, authorities said.

The incident occurred around 7:30 p.m. at a home on the 48200 block of Carmel Achor Road. Deputies reported that the men were reportedly handling black powder when the explosion occurred. One victim sustained a severe knee injury, with a splintered bone protruding, according to the incident report.

Investigators found a sheet of roofing shingles with holes, a cellphone and battery, and numerous instances of unsafe wiring that may have contributed to the blast.

The Youngstown Bomb Squad arrived about an hour later to assist at the scene.

One man was airlifted to Mercy Hospital in Youngstown, while the other was transported by ambulance. The Columbiana County Prosecutor’s Office is reviewing the incident.
