NORTH CAROLINA — Two people were killed early Sunday morning in a head-on collision on North Carolina Highway 16 South near Highway 73, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.

Troopers said the crash occurred around 12:40 a.m. when a 2006 Acura RSX traveling north in the southbound lane collided head-on with a 2014 Nissan Altima. Both vehicles caught fire following the impact.

The driver of the Acura, identified as 32-year-old Rashann Curmon of Charlotte, died at the scene. A child in the Acura was taken to a hospital with minor injuries.

The driver of the Nissan, 50-year-old Steven Sweda of Charlotte, also died at the scene, troopers said.

Highway Patrol’s preliminary investigation indicates that neither speed nor impairment were contributing factors. The roadway was closed for about three hours during the investigation.
