ILLINOIS — A child and an adult were killed in a single-vehicle crash Saturday afternoon near Steward, according to the Lee County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies said they were called to the southbound lanes of Interstate 39 near Milepost 92 shortly before 12:40 p.m. The crash involved a white Ford heavy-duty pickup truck towing a white Cherokee horse trailer that struck a tree.
Four people were inside the vehicle. Authorities confirmed that the two rear passengers — a 5-year-old boy and a 32-year-old man — died from their injuries. The driver, a 25-year-old man, and a 47-year-old front-seat passenger were taken to a local hospital.
Several horses were also involved in the crash, but their conditions were not immediately known.
The incident remains under investigation.
