
VIRGINIA — Two people are dead following a two-vehicle crash Friday night at the intersection of Jefferson Avenue and 72nd Street, according to the Newport News Police Department.
Police said officers responded to the crash around 10:48 p.m. on March 13.
Investigators say a 2010 Mercedes-Benz traveling southbound on Jefferson Avenue at a high rate of speed struck a 2010 Ford Edge that was attempting to turn left onto 72nd Street.
After the initial impact, the Mercedes continued forward, struck a utility pole, and came to a stop in a nearby parking lot where the vehicle caught fire, police said.
The driver of the Ford Edge died at the scene.
The driver of the Mercedes was taken to a local hospital, where he later died from his injuries, according to authorities.
Police say the crash remains under investigation.
