Two people dead following snowmobile crash in Indiana

INDIANA — Two people died early Saturday morning following a snowmobile crash on Blue Lake in Whitley County.

According to the Whitley County Sheriff’s Office, the crash occurred around 12:30 a.m., resulting in the deaths of 44-year-old Robert P. Baker Jr. and 17-year-old Josefine Heger, both of Churubusco.

Initial details on how the crash occurred were not immediately available.

However, in a Sunday morning press release, the Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR) reported that Baker and Heger were riding a snowmobile together on the frozen lake when they crashed into brush along the shoreline.

Both were ejected from the vehicle.

Emergency responders provided aid, but both victims were pronounced dead at the scene.

Their bodies were transported to the Northeast Indiana Forensic Center.

Multiple agencies assisted in the response, including the Churubusco Police Department, Smith Township Fire Department, Whitley County Sheriff’s Department, Whitley County Coroner’s Office, Indiana State Police, and Indiana DNR.

The crash remains under investigation by the Whitley County Sheriff’s Office, Whitley County Coroner’s Office, Indiana State Police, and Indiana DNR.
