
VIRGINIA — Two people were killed and seven others injured in a mass shooting early Saturday morning in Richmond’s Shockoe Bottom neighborhood, according to police.
Officers with the Richmond Police Department were on patrol around 2:47 a.m. on Feb. 21 when they observed a large crowd involved in confrontations in the 00 block of North 18th Street.
When officers responded to the disturbance, they found a woman unresponsive with gunshot wounds. She was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
Additional officers arriving at the scene located a second victim, a man who was also unresponsive with gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police said a total of nine people were shot in the incident. In addition to the two fatalities, one man sustained life-threatening injuries. Three men and three women suffered non-life-threatening injuries. All seven surviving victims were transported to local hospitals, with three taken by personal vehicles.
Authorities have not released information about the number of shooters, potential suspects or whether anyone is in custody. It is unclear if police believe there is an ongoing threat to the public.
