NORTH CAROLINA — Two people were killed and others injured in a shooting late Monday night in Robeson County, according to the Robeson County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies responded just after 10:30 p.m. to the 2000 block of Highway 711 near Lumberton following a report of suspicious activity at a business. Sheriff Burnis Wilkins said that before deputies arrived, the county’s E-911 Communications Center received information that multiple individuals had been shot at the location.

Upon arrival, deputies found Carlos Carmona, 37, and Jeremiah Moore, 30, both of Lumberton, suffering from gunshot wounds. Both were transported to UNC Southeastern, where they later died from their injuries.

A third man was also found with gunshot wounds and was transported to an undisclosed medical facility for treatment. He is expected to recover.

During the investigation, Wilkins said deputies determined a fourth person was present at the scene. He added that Jerry Scott, 45, of Laurinburg, was later located walking in the area and arrested. Scott has been charged with felony conspiracy and felony larceny and is being held at the Robeson County Detention Center under a $25,000 secured bond.

Wilkins said that at this time the incident appears to be a self-defense situation. He added that Carmona, who survived the shooting, is expected to face felony charges upon his release from the medical facility.

The investigation remains ongoing.
