NORTH CAROLINA — Two people were killed and two others taken into custody late Sunday night after a high-speed chase involving a Ford Mustang ended in a crash in Wayne County, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.
Troopers reported spotting the Mustang traveling 120 mph on U.S. Highway 70. When they attempted to pull the vehicle over, the driver refused to stop, prompting a pursuit. The chase continued until the driver lost control on Pinkney Road near Kenly and crashed into a tree.
The impact ejected two back-seat passengers, who died at the scene. The driver, a 17-year-old, and a 16-year-old front-seat passenger were taken to UNC Wayne Hospital in Goldsboro with non-life-threatening injuries. Troopers said alcohol, marijuana, and two guns were found inside the car.
Names of those involved have not been released. Authorities said the driver and front-seat passenger are expected to face criminal charges.
According to the Highway Patrol, troopers are permitted to pursue a vehicle based on the perceived threat to public safety. Factors such as traffic conditions, time of day, weather, and roadway type are considered, and supervisors may call off a pursuit if it becomes too dangerous.
