ARKANSAS — Two people were killed in a motorcycle crash Friday afternoon near Avoca, according to authorities.

A preliminary report from the Arkansas State Police states the crash occurred around 12:30 p.m. on U.S. Highway 62 at Russell Road.

Investigators said a 2001 Chevrolet Tahoe was attempting to turn left when it entered the path of an oncoming 1989 Harley-Davidson motorcycle. The motorcycle struck the SUV.

The driver of the motorcycle, identified as 70-year-old Michael J. Cordes of Rogers, and his passenger, 67-year-old Freda I. Cordes, also of Rogers, were both killed in the crash.

Authorities said no other injuries were reported. The weather was clear and the roadway was dry at the time of the crash.

Emergency crews from multiple agencies responded to the scene, including the Benton County Sheriff’s Office, Pea Ridge Police Department, and Avoca Fire and Rescue.

Officials said 45-year-old Jose Luis Gamez was arrested in connection with the crash. He faces two counts of negligent homicide, along with charges of driving while intoxicated and improper entry or exit at an intersection.

Authorities said the investigation remains ongoing.
