INDIANA — A Fulton County couple died from carbon monoxide poisoning in their home, according to the county coroner.
The Fulton County Coroner’s Office said Maurice Lewis and Barbara Sue Lewis were found dead Tuesday by a family member. The coroner said the couple had been deceased for only a few hours when they were discovered.
Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless, and highly toxic gas produced by fuel-burning sources commonly found inside homes, including furnaces, fireplaces, and space heaters. The coroner said she believes the couple did not have a carbon monoxide detector installed in their home.
The coroner described Maurice and Barbara Sue Lewis as “very sweet people” and said their deaths have had a noticeable impact on the community. She said she has heard that residents have begun purchasing carbon monoxide detectors following the incident and expressed hope that the increased awareness will help prevent future tragedies.
According to the coroner’s office, these are the first carbon monoxide–related deaths reported in Fulton County in several years.
