Two people dead after vehicle crashes over embankment in Florida

FLORIDA — Two people were killed in a fiery crash Thursday night in Volusia County, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Troopers said the crash occurred around 9:30 p.m. on Tomoka Farms Road, just south of Bellevue Avenue.

Preliminary findings indicate a 2005 Acura RL was traveling northbound on Tomoka Farms Road when it ran off the roadway. The vehicle then struck an embankment, overturned, and collided with construction equipment.

Investigators said a passenger was ejected during the crash, and the vehicle subsequently became engulfed in flames.

Both the driver and the passenger were pronounced dead at the scene. The passenger was identified as a 27-year-old man who, according to troopers, was not wearing a seatbelt. The Medical Examiner’s Office is working to confirm the identity of the driver.

Florida Highway Patrol officials said they are continuing to investigate what caused the vehicle to leave the roadway. The crash remains under investigation.
