FLORIDA — Two brothers were killed Wednesday night when their vehicle was struck by a train while crossing railroad tracks in Pierson, according to the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies said the crash occurred as the brothers, a 32-year-old driver and a 20-year-old passenger, were traveling eastbound in a four-door Chevrolet on W. Washington Avenue from County Road 3.
Investigators determined that the vehicle drove around the lowered crossing arms while a train was approaching.
Both the crossing arms and warning lights were functioning at the time of the incident.
The train struck the vehicle as it attempted to cross, and both men were pronounced dead at the scene.
“The Volusia Sheriff’s Office sends our condolences to the family following this tragedy,” the agency said in a statement.
