FLORIDA — Two men were killed early Wednesday morning after being struck by a pickup truck while standing outside their vehicles on Interstate 95, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
Troopers said the crash occurred just before 5 a.m. on I-95 northbound near Old St. Augustine Road, northwest of State Road 9B.
Authorities said a 56-year-old man from Palm Coast and a 38-year-old man from Jacksonville had stopped their vehicles in the inside lane and were standing on the inside shoulder. It is unclear why the vehicles were stopped.
Investigators said a 63-year-old man from Wilton Manors was driving a pickup truck in the inside lane when he swerved onto the shoulder, striking both men and their vehicles.
Both victims were pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the pickup truck was not injured and was wearing a seat belt, according to authorities.
The crash caused all northbound lanes of I-95 to be shut down for several hours, with traffic diverted onto State Road 9B.
The incident remains under investigation.
