NORTH CAROLINA — Two women are facing charges in connection with a fentanyl-related death following a year-long investigation by the Scotland County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies arrested Laura Cox, 30, of Rockingham, North Carolina, and Allison Davis, 27, of Cheraw, South Carolina, in connection with a death that occurred in May 2024. Both women are charged with death by distribution and felony conspiracy, according to the sheriff’s office.

Cox was issued a $1.5 million secured bond, while Davis received a $1 million secured bond.

Sheriff’s officials said narcotic investigator Lt. E. Haywood was notified in May 2024 of a death believed to involve the illegal distribution of fentanyl. Investigators determined the individual died as a result of the illegal drug.

During the investigation, deputies gathered information from county emergency services, Scotland Memorial Hospital, and the Office of the Medical Examiner.

Following an extensive investigation and in-depth interviews, warrants were obtained, and both women were arrested on Dec. 1, 2025. Multiple agencies assisted in the investigation, including Narcotic Investigator Sgt. S. Sullivan, the Rockingham Police Department, the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office Detention Center, and law enforcement agencies in Chesterfield County and Cheraw, South Carolina.

The investigation remains ongoing, according to authorities.
