NORTH CAROLINA — Two people were arrested Wednesday after Gaston County police seized about 11 pounds of cocaine during a traffic stop, authorities report.

Officers stopped a Chevrolet Traverse with Texas plates along Summit Crossing Place near Lowell Road in Gastonia after observing the vehicle following too closely and making multiple evasive maneuvers.

When the vehicle turned onto Summit Crossing Place, passenger Roberto Azama-Rodriquez, 39, fled on foot carrying a weighted box.

Police chased him into nearby woods, where he discarded the box into a creek. The box was recovered and found to contain approximately 11 pounds of cocaine, valued at nearly $1 million.

The driver, 55-year-old Manuel Gomez-Bustos, was later located and arrested on North New Hope Road. Both men were charged with trafficking cocaine and are being held without bond. Jail records indicate an ICE hold has been requested for both suspects.
