SOUTH CAROLINA — Two people have been arrested after authorities say a man threw a glass bottle at a child, causing multiple injuries.

According to the Horry County Police Department, 27-year-old Rayquan Worthy and 26-year-old Kaitlynn Byrd, both of Conway, were taken into custody Tuesday.

Investigators said the incident came to light after the Department of Social Services responded to Homewood Elementary School on Feb. 10, where a child was reported to have visible injuries. The child initially told officials the injuries were caused by a bicycle accident during a snowstorm.

However, a witness later told investigators that Worthy became angry and threw a glass bottle at the child after the child opened a bedroom door. Authorities said the bottle shattered, cutting the child in multiple places.

Worthy is accused of causing physical harm to the child, while Byrd is charged with failing to seek medical treatment, according to arrest warrants.

Both are charged with cruelty to children and are being held without bond at the J. Reuben Long Detention Center.
