NORTH CAROLINA — Two parents have been charged with felony child abuse after a 2-year-old child was found to have suffered serious injuries, according to the Kinston Police Department.
Police said the investigation began on Jan. 30, 2026, when the Lenoir County Department of Social Services filed a report regarding a toddler who had been taken for medical treatment for a broken arm. During the medical evaluation, healthcare staff also discovered evidence of an older fracture.
Detectives with the Kinston Police Department launched an investigation into the child’s injuries. After consulting with the Lenoir County District Attorney’s Office, authorities obtained arrest warrants for the child’s father, 28-year-old Joshua Capps, and the child’s mother, 26-year-old Shianne Godley.
Both Capps and Godley were charged with felony child abuse inflicting serious physical injury.
On Feb. 27, 2026, the two were taken into custody and transported to the Lenoir County Jail. They remained in custody at the time of the department’s release.
Because of the sensitive nature of the case, police said no additional information will be released at this time.
