ALABAMA — Two men were arrested Wednesday after authorities say they attempted to smuggle contraband into Ventress Correctional Facility, according to the Alabama Department of Corrections.

Officials said the incident began around 6:42 a.m. when a Barbour County deputy responded to a call from the Department of Human Resources office in Clayton. The two men reportedly told authorities they were cold and had been left without a ride.

An ADOC K-9 unit was called in, and tracking dogs led agents to an area where the suspects had allegedly been dropped off. Along the route, authorities discovered multiple packages containing suspected drugs and other prohibited items.

According to officials, the items recovered included approximately 444 grams of marijuana, 32 grams of methamphetamine, 35 cell phones, a Wi-Fi hotspot, wireless earbuds, USB drives, SIM tools, charging blocks, cigars, knives and a digital scale.

The suspects were identified as Larry Jerome Pinkston Marshal and Eddie Cortez Smith.

Both men were charged with trafficking methamphetamine, first-degree possession of marijuana and promoting prison contraband. They were booked into the Barbour County Jail, where they remain as the investigation continues.
