FAYETTE COUNTY — A traffic stop in Fayette County, TX led to the seizure of more than 42 pounds of suspected methamphetamine and the arrest of two men, according to the sheriff’s office.

Authorities said the stop occurred March 20 on westbound Highway 71 near La Grange after a drug interdiction investigator observed multiple traffic violations involving a 2019 white Toyota Corolla.

Investigators reported observing indicators of criminal activity and obtained consent to search the vehicle.

During the investigation, the driver fled on foot but was quickly apprehended after a brief pursuit.

Officials said a search of the vehicle revealed approximately 42.5 pounds of suspected methamphetamine concealed in multiple bundles.

Authorities identified the suspects as 38-year-old Jose Manuel Gomez Alvarez of Rockdale and 24-year-old Luis Christian Hernandez Cruz of Elgin.

Gomez Alvarez was charged with felony possession of a controlled substance and evading arrest and detention. Hernandez Cruz was charged with felony possession of a controlled substance.

Both men were transported to the Dan R. Beck Justice Center.

The investigation remains ongoing.
