Two children injured after being struck by van in Michigan

MICHIGAN — Two young boys were hospitalized Thursday morning after being struck by a van that failed to stop for a crossing guard, according to the Newaygo County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities said the crash happened on S. Division Street near Church Street as a 12-year-old boy and a 6-year-old boy were crossing the road. Both children were taken to Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital in Grand Rapids.

Officials said the 12-year-old has since been released, while the 6-year-old remains hospitalized in stable condition.

The sheriff’s office emphasized the importance of school zone safety and urged drivers to slow down, obey crossing guards, and stay alert for children.

“Every child deserves to get to school and home safely,” said Hesperia School Resource Officer Deputy Vanderwall. “By taking a few extra seconds to stop at crossings and staying attentive near schools, drivers can prevent serious accidents and save lives.”

The sheriff’s office said it will continue working with local schools and community groups to promote pedestrian safety. The crash remains under investigation.
