VIRGINIA — A tractor-trailer crash caused a tanker fire and major traffic delays on Interstate 95 in Chesterfield County early Tuesday morning, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation.

The crash occurred around 6:46 a.m. on Nov. 25 near the Route 288 exit.

Virginia State Police said the tanker, which was carrying lime, was traveling south when it crashed over the jersey wall and went off the right side of the interstate. The vehicle overturned and caught fire.

The driver, a 38-year-old Maryland man, suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital. State Police said he has been charged with reckless driving.

All southbound lanes of I-95 remain closed, along with the Coxendale Road bridge, VDOT reported. Southbound traffic is being detoured at Exit 62, while Route 288 traffic is being detoured at Route 1. Drivers are urged to follow posted detours or use alternate routes.

Chesterfield County Fire and EMS said the fire has been extinguished, but the roadway is expected to remain closed for an extended period. The crash is still under investigation by Virginia State Police.
