ILLINOIS — A Freeport man is facing multiple charges after deputies say a traffic stop in a Dollar General parking lot led to the discovery of suspected crack cocaine.
According to the Stephenson County Sheriff’s Office, deputies conducted a traffic stop shortly before 7:30 p.m. on March 6 after observing a vehicle commit two traffic violations. The vehicle pulled into the parking lot of a Dollar General near the intersection of South Galena and South Armstrong avenues.
Authorities said a K9 unit conducted a sniff around the outside of the vehicle and alerted to the possible presence of narcotics.
Deputies identified the driver as 49-year-old Damon Stib of Freeport. Officials say Stib ran from deputies on foot, leading to a brief chase before he was subdued with a Taser.
An ambulance was called to the scene because a Taser was used, but Stib refused medical treatment. No deputies were injured during the incident.
During the investigation, deputies say the K9 located approximately 74.4 grams of suspected crack cocaine that had been discarded during the foot pursuit.
Stib was arrested and taken to the Stephenson County Jail, where he is being held without bond. He faces charges including possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance, possession of a controlled substance, illegal transportation of adult-use cannabis in a motor vehicle, and resisting or obstructing a peace officer.
He is scheduled to make an initial court appearance Tuesday.
