Tornados possible in parts of Florida this week

FLORIDA — Strong storms are expected to move through Central Florida this evening as a cold front pushes into the region, bringing the threat of damaging winds, hail and a possible isolated tornado.

Meteorologists say the primary concern is strong, potentially damaging wind gusts as a line of thunderstorms moves from north to south between 5 p.m. and 11 p.m. Northern counties are expected to see the storms first, with activity spreading south through the evening hours.

The National Weather Service has issued a tornado watch for 15 Florida counties, including Marion County, until 8 p.m. A tornado watch means conditions are favorable for the development of tornadoes and severe storms.

Due to the threat of severe weather, NASCAR officials moved up the start time for Sunday’s Daytona 500 by one hour.

In addition to the storm threat, dry conditions combined with gusty winds have heightened the risk of wildfires and brush fires across Central Florida. Several areas have implemented burn bans as a result.

A burn ban is issued by a county when prolonged dry conditions create severe drought, increasing the likelihood of wildfires. The bans prohibit outdoor burning activities such as campfires, bonfires and burning trash until conditions improve.

Florida’s fire season typically peaks in April, and officials urge residents to take precautions to protect their property as drought conditions persist.

Residents are encouraged to monitor weather updates and have multiple ways to receive alerts as the storms move through the area.
