INDIANA — A preliminary storm survey by the National Weather Service has confirmed at least one tornado in Huntington County following severe thunderstorms that moved through northern Indiana Thursday night.
According to the National Weather Service office in Northern Indiana, meteorologists conducted a damage survey Friday covering areas from near La Fontaine to southeast of Banquo in Wabash and Huntington counties.
Officials said the tornado was confirmed near the Huntington/Grant county line within a broader swath of wind damage. The circulation touched down just east of South 100 West and north of East 700 North in southwestern Huntington County before moving quickly southeast.
The tornado caused extensive damage to a converted animal barn and a grain elevator, along with tree damage and scattered debris observed along its path.
Damage assessments are continuing in the La Fontaine area, and additional details are expected to be released.
Officials emphasized the findings are preliminary and subject to change pending a final review.
