VIRGINIA — A toddler is fighting for his life after being rescued from a pond in Henrico County during freezing conditions Monday afternoon.

According to the Henrico County Division of Police, officers were called around 1:40 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 26, to the 1200 block of Shore View Drive for a reported medical emergency involving a toddler boy who had been pulled from a nearby pond.

When officers arrived, they found the child unconscious and receiving CPR from Henrico County Division of Fire crews. Police said the toddler was transported to a nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries.

A man was also treated at the scene for hypothermia, authorities said.

The incident occurred as Central Virginia continues to experience below-freezing temperatures following a recent winter storm. Officials say overnight temperatures are expected to drop into the single digits throughout the week.

The incident remains under investigation by Henrico Police.
