NORTH CAROLINA — Three people, including a 7-year-old child, were killed early Saturday morning in a wrong-way crash on Interstate 95 in Robeson County, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.
Troopers said the crash happened around 3:38 a.m. on I-95 North near mile marker 5.
Investigators said a man driving a 2024 Mazda SUV was traveling south in the northbound lanes when he collided head-on with a 2023 Hyundai SUV. The impact caused the Hyundai to leave the roadway and catch fire.
The driver of the Hyundai was transported to a hospital, where she later died from her injuries. Two passengers in the vehicle, including a 7-year-old girl, were also killed in the crash.
The driver of the Mazda was taken to the hospital for treatment. Authorities said his condition has not been released.
Troopers said speed and impairment are not believed to be factors in the crash. The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
