FLORIDA — Three people, including two young children, were killed in a crash Friday evening in Charlotte County, according to authorities.
The Florida Highway Patrol said the crash occurred just before 6 p.m. on northbound Interstate 75 near mile marker 153.
Investigators said a driver traveling southbound at a high rate of speed veered off the roadway, crossed the median, and entered the northbound lanes, where the vehicle collided with another car.
The impact of the crash was severe, with troopers reporting that one of the vehicles split into two pieces.
A 25-year-old man from North Fort Myers was pronounced dead at the scene. Two children, ages 5 and 6, both from Fort Myers, were also killed. One child died at the scene, while the other was airlifted to a hospital with critical injuries and later died.
The driver who crossed the median, a 28-year-old man from New York, was seriously injured and transported to a nearby hospital. Authorities said his vehicle overturned and came to rest on the shoulder.
The crash remains under investigation, and charges are pending.
