TEXAS — Three people, including a teenager, were killed in a crash Wednesday night on State Highway 99 near Dayton in Liberty County, according to authorities.

The crash occurred just after 9 p.m. between FM 1960 and U.S. 90, where the highway narrows to two lanes, the Texas Department of Public Safety said.

Investigators said a 44-year-old man driving a Ford F-150 southbound crossed the center line for unknown reasons and sideswiped a northbound Ford F-250. The driver of the F-250 attempted to avoid the collision and sustained only minor damage and a flat tire.

A Lincoln SUV traveling northbound behind the F-250 was then struck on its front-left side by the F-150, authorities said.

The Lincoln was driven by a 17-year-old boy from Cleveland, with a 39-year-old woman as a passenger. Both were pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the F-150 also died as a result of the crash, according to DPS.

The driver of the F-250 was not seriously injured.

Firefighters from Liberty County and Dayton worked for more than an hour to free the victims from the wreckage.

State Highway 99 was closed during the investigation and reopened around 1:30 a.m. Thursday after crews cleared the scene.

The crash remains under investigation.
