MICHIGAN — A car crash Friday night in Pontiac claimed the lives of three people, including two young children, authorities said.
The accident occurred at 8:20 p.m. at the intersection of Montcalm and Joslyn Roads.
According to the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office, a 21-year-old Pontiac resident driving a Honda Civic veered into oncoming traffic, left the road, struck several signs and poles, and then returned to Montcalm Road. The Civic collided with a Chevrolet Malibu that was stopped at a red light.
Emergency responders arrived quickly, but the 37-year-old driver of the Malibu died at the scene. Two young passengers, ages 6 and 4, were taken to the hospital and later died from their injuries. A third passenger, 9, remains hospitalized in critical condition. The driver of the Honda Civic is in stable condition.
Preliminary investigation suggests speed may have been a factor, and authorities are also examining possible involvement of alcohol or drugs.
Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard expressed condolences, saying, “This unimaginable tragedy has taken the lives of a parent and two young children. Our investigators will work tirelessly to determine the full circumstances of this incident, and we extend our deepest sympathies to the family as they navigate this profound loss.”
