VIRGINIA — Three people were arrested following a traffic stop in Fairfax County earlier this month after police said firearms and illegal drugs were found inside a vehicle.
According to the Fairfax County Police Department, officers with the Mount Vernon Police District Neighborhood Patrol Unit stopped a car near the intersection of Russell Road and Norwood Drive on Jan. 6 because of a modified exhaust. During the stop, officers reported that one of the passengers appeared nervous.
Police said when the passenger was asked to exit the vehicle, he resisted and reached toward his waistband. Officers intervened and took him into custody, recovering a firearm during the encounter.
A subsequent search of the vehicle led to the discovery of a second firearm, along with suspected marijuana and psilocybin mushrooms, according to police. Three men from Alexandria were arrested as a result of the investigation.
Police identified the suspects as 18-year-old Maico Barrios II, who is facing charges including attempted malicious wounding of a law enforcement officer, obstruction of justice, and multiple firearm and drug distribution counts. The driver, 19-year-old Michael Owusu, was charged with drug distribution and traffic violations. Another passenger, 19-year-old Bashir Abdelmonim Bakhit, faces charges of drug distribution, firearm possession with narcotics, and possession of a fictitious license.
A 17-year-old male was also inside the vehicle at the time of the stop. Police said potential charges against the juvenile are still under consideration. The case remains under investigation.
