Three people arrested after traffic stop results in drug bust in North Carolina

NORTH CAROLINA — Three convicted felons were arrested after a traffic stop in Carteret County led to the seizure of fentanyl, methamphetamine and a handgun, authorities said.

According to the Carteret County Sheriff’s Office, members of the Narcotics Unit and the Neuse River Narcotics Task Force conducted a traffic stop Feb. 19 on a vehicle entering the county as part of an investigation into suspected narcotics trafficking.

Deputies arrested Jerry Travis, 36, of Havelock; William Bell, 46, of Beaufort; and Leigha Gibson, 37, of Havelock, without incident.

During a search of the vehicle, detectives seized 14.1 grams of fentanyl, 25.2 grams of methamphetamine and a 9 mm handgun.

Authorities said all three suspects are convicted felons and are prohibited from possessing firearms.

Travis is charged with trafficking a Schedule II controlled substance (fentanyl), possession with intent to manufacture, sell and deliver a Schedule II controlled substance (methamphetamine), and possession of a firearm by a felon. He is being held under a $750,000 secured bond.

Bell is charged with possession of a firearm by a felon and is being held under a $100,000 secured bond.

Gibson is also charged with possession of a firearm by a felon and is being held under a $25,000 secured bond.

The investigation remains ongoing.
